Give Annan one night as a rail stop between Carlisle and Dumfries; skip it as a base unless you want the Devil's Porridge museum and river walks.
Annan is a small market town in Dumfries and Galloway, 22 minutes by train from Carlisle and about 25 minutes from Dumfries. The town itself is compact and walkable, but the main reason to stop is the Devil's Porridge museum at Eastriggs, three miles east, which tells the story of the First World War munitions complex. Most travellers pass through on the Glasgow–Carlisle line; one night is enough unless you are walking the Annandale Way or using it as a cheap base for the Solway coast.
