Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece and is now the best base in the Argolid: a compact old town of Venetian and neoclassical houses on a small peninsula, with two castles over the water and Mycenae, Tiryns and Epidaurus within an hour. Two nights covers the town and one ancient site; three nights adds a beach day or a second site. Spring and autumn are the right seasons; July and August are hot and crowded.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is about 15 min end to end and cars are restricted in parts of it. Palamidi is an uphill walk of 857 steps (check the time it takes you) or a short drive; Bourtzi is a 5-min boat ride from the port. Buses leave from the station at the east edge of the old town; for Mycenae and Epidaurus check KTEL Argolidas connections and changes, as direct services are not guaranteed. Trains to Nafplio are suspended; the nearest railhead is Corinth.

Watch out

Safety

Nafplio is a low-risk town; the real issues are summer heat on the Palamidi climb, uneven stone lanes, and pickpockets only in the busiest summer weeks. Keep valuables out of beach bags and lock the car.
  • Palamidi's 857 steps are steep and exposed; go early, carry water, and use the road if it is hot.
  • Bourtzi boat trips run in season only and stop in bad weather; check at the port before you plan around it.
  • Old-town lanes are uneven stone; wear shoes you can walk in, not sandals for a castle climb.
  • Parking near the port fills on summer weekends; arrive before midday or park in the new town.
  • Museum and castle hours change by season and on public holidays: check the official site before you go.
