Spijkenisse
Use Spijkenisse as a half-day metro stop from Rotterdam, not a base: the Voorstraat dike, the old church, De Boekenberg and the small grocery museum fill two to three hours.
Spijkenisse is the third city of Greater Rotterdam, on the island of Putten in the Zuid-Hollandse Eilanden. Its old core is a single dike street, the Voorstraat, with a stone church, a handful of restaurants and the pyramid-shaped public library De Boekenberg. Rotterdam metro lines C and D end here, so it works as a cheap, quiet bed with the big city 25–35 minutes away — not as a sightseeing destination in its own right.

Getting around
The historic centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Rotterdam metro lines C and D serve Spijkenisse Centrum, Heemraadlaan and De Akkers; line D runs from Rotterdam Centraal, line C from De Terp via Schiedam. Local buses 81, 84 and 105 cover the outer districts, which hold little for a visitor. Bikes are the local default; rent in Rotterdam if you want one.
