Millbrae

Use Millbrae as an airport-night base, not a sightseeing stop: 1 night before or after an SFO flight, or a half-day transfer between BART and Caltrain.

Millbrae is a small Peninsula city whose main value is transit: it has the southernmost BART station on the Peninsula, a Caltrain stop on the same platform complex, and SFO one BART stop away. Sights are thin — a bayfront park under the flight path, two short trails, a weekend train museum. Stay here for a cheap bed near the airport, or pass through on a BART–Caltrain connection.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

BART (Red Line, Yellow Line after about 21:00) and Caltrain share the Millbrae Transit Center at El Camino Real and Millbrae Avenue; SamTrans buses cover the rest of the city. Caltrain to San Francisco 4th & King is about 18–22 min depending on service; BART to Montgomery St is about 38 min. Most of Millbrae is walkable from the station, but Broadway and the bayfront hotels are 15–25 min on foot.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Caltrain from Millbrae to 4th & King, or BART to downtown stations

Caltrain is the nicer ride and drops you near Oracle Park; BART puts you downtown.

Burlingame

go

Door to door: About 10–20 min

Caltrain one stop south, or SamTrans along El Camino Real

Better restaurant strip on Burlingame Avenue; use it if Millbrae's Broadway feels thin.

Half Moon Bay

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min by car

Car via I-280 and CA-92, or SamTrans seasonal service

No practical direct transit; go only with a car.

San Mateo

go

Door to door: About 15–25 min

Caltrain south, or SamTrans

More shops and food; a simple add-on to a Millbrae day.

Door to door: About 35–45 min

Caltrain south to Menlo Park station

Caltrain stops close to the centre; pair with a Stanford-area walk.

South San Francisco

skip

Door to door: About 10–15 min

BART north one or two stops

Mostly industrial and biotech; nothing here you cannot see from Millbrae.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Transit Center / El Camino Real

Walk to BART, Caltrain and SamTrans; diners and cafés on the doorstep. Best for a car-free airport night.

Old Bayshore Highway

Airport hotels with bay views and plane noise; free shuttles to SFO. Best for early departures.

Broadway

Small restaurant strip with the Saturday farmers' market; quieter, a 15–20 min walk west of the station.

Watch out

Safety

Millbrae is a low-crime residential city and feels safe day and night around the transit center. The real risks are petty theft from parked cars near the airport hotels, aircraft noise, and late-night waits on an empty platform — check the last train and keep to lit areas.
  • Caltrain runs less often and stops earlier than BART; check the last train before you plan a late return.
  • BART and Caltrain use separate fare systems — Clipper works on both, but you tap in and out on each.
  • Hotels on Old Bayshore Highway are under the SFO flight path: expect aircraft noise.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; the price on the menu is not the price you pay.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink, 15–20% taxis.
