Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Sluis is a small fortified town in western Zeelandic Flanders, rebuilt after 1944 bombing, 17 km from Bruges and a few km from the North Sea. Its draw is the walkable old centre, the only belfry in the Netherlands, a 1739 windmill, and Sunday shopping that pulls in Belgian day-trippers. Almost nobody needs a bed here: the coast and Bruges hold the rooms.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is flat and walkable in 20 minutes end to end. For the coast, the polders and neighbouring villages you need a bike or a car; buses are inter-city and skip the seaside. Bikes can be rented in Bruges and Knokke-Heist and carried on the train.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Cadzand-Bad and Zwin beach

go

Door to door: About 30 min by bike

Bike or car, 8 km north

Dune-top path; the Zwin is a tidal plain, so check tide times before crossing.

Breskens

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h by bike

Bike along the dunes via Cadzand, about 15 km

Ferry from Breskens to Vlissingen links to the Dutch rail network.

Brugesovernight

Door to door: About 45 min by bus

Bus 42 direct, or bike 17 km along the Damse Vaart

Far more to see than Sluis; sleep there and visit Sluis as the day trip.

Hulst

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or bus via Oostburg and Terneuzen

Another fortified Zeelandic Flanders town; pair the two.

Knokke-Heist (Belgium)

go

Door to door: About 40 min by bike

Bike 9–10 km around the Zwin reserve

Nearest Belgian rail station; buses from here need a change.

Middelburg

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car via the Western Scheldt Tunnel (toll), or bus and ferry via Breskens

The tunnel is 6.6 km, the longest road tunnel in the Benelux.

Vlissingen

go

Door to door: About 2 h

Bike to Breskens, then the bicycle and pedestrian ferry

Ferry crossing over the Westerschelde; check the timetable.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Sluis town centre

A handful of small hotels and a pension; book early for summer weekends.

Cadzand-Bad

8 km north; beach, dunes and more beds. Best if the sea is the point.

Breskens

17 km east; ferry to Vlissingen, harbour, wider choice of rooms.

Bruges (Belgium)

17 km south by bike path or bus 42; the biggest choice of beds and the best base for a car-free trip.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Dutch town; the real risks are tide and current at the Zwin, weak mobile signal near the border, and Sunday crowds in the shopping streets.
  • Sluis is a border town: mobile signal can be weak and patchy outside the centre.
  • Zwin beach: at low tide you can wade across to Belgium through 50–80 cm of fast water, but if the tide turns you may have to walk more than 5 km around the reserve.
  • No night shops in Sluis; the nearest are in Knokke-Heist (9 km) and Maldegem (14 km).
  • The nearest Albert Heijn is in Oostburg, not in Sluis.
  • Sunday is the busiest shopping day; restaurants fill in high season, so reserve.
