Stanthorpe

Give Stanthorpe one full day plus one night: wineries and granite country by car, Mount Marlay lookout at sunset, then move on.

Stanthorpe sits on the New England Tableland at about 800 m, so it is cooler than Brisbane and the closest thing southern Queensland has to a wine district. The town itself is small; the appeal is the surrounding granite belt of cellar doors, orchards and national park. Two nights is the sweet spot, three if you want a full day in Girraween. Without a car you will see very little.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: cellar doors, the national park and the lookout are spread over 30 km of back roads. Local buses exist but are scarce and infrequent. Some hostels run town and farm shuttles for workers. If you drink at cellar doors, book a wine tour or nominate a driver — police run random breath tests on the highway.

Watch out

Safety

Stanthorpe is a small, low-crime country town and safe for tourists. The real risks are highway driving at dusk, unsealed back roads after rain, and drinking at cellar doors before a long drive home.
  • No car means no wineries and no national park: plan around that or book a tour.
  • Kangaroos and deer on the roads at dawn and dusk; the New England Highway is unfenced in places.
  • Winter nights drop below freezing; many older motels have weak heating.
  • Cellar-door tastings usually charge a small fee, sometimes refunded on purchase.
  • Summer storms can close national park tracks without much warning.
