Metepec is a pottery town that Toluca swallowed: the centre still reads as a small colonial plaza ringed by workshops, and the Tree of Life ceramics sold here sit in museums abroad. Sights take a few hours; the rest of the value is in the Mercado de Artesanías, which is only fully open at weekends. Most travellers come as a day trip from Toluca or from Mexico City (transfer times check).

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: plaza to Museo del Barro is a few minutes on foot, the Mercado de Artesanías about 15 min west, and Cerro del Maguey a short uphill walk from the plaza. Local buses and colectivos run along Pino Suárez and the Toluca–Metepec corridor; taxis cover the rest.

Watch out

Safety

Metepec is calmer than most of the Mexico City metro area, and the centre is fine on foot by day and early evening. Use normal big-city care after dark, keep to lit streets near the plaza, and carry small change for buses and markets.
  • Weekday afternoons: about half the stalls in the Mercado de Artesanías close; shop Saturday or Sunday.
  • Drivers waiting at the bus terminal may quote above the normal fare — agree the price first or use an app.
  • Altitude: Metepec sits above 2,600 (≈ US$150) m, higher than Mexico City. Take the first day easy.
  • Some bars and restaurants post no prices; ask the total before ordering.
