Rockport is a small Cape Ann town of about 7,000 people, once a granite quarrying centre and later an artists' colony. The harbour, Bearskin Neck shops and the rocky shore at Halibut Point are the whole draw, and the centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day. Most travellers come as a day trip from Boston or as one night on a North Shore loop with Gloucester and Salem.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Dock Square to Bearskin Neck is under 5 minutes on foot. The MBTA commuter rail from Boston's North Station takes about 70 minutes and drops you less than a mile from the centre. CATA buses link the Cape Ann towns; a car helps for Halibut Point and the back roads, and downtown parking meters are short-stay with few free spaces.

Watch out

Safety

Rockport is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day or evening. The real risks are slippery granite at the shore, cold Atlantic water, and summer parking and traffic rather than crime.
  • Downtown parking is metered and fills by mid-morning in summer; the free Blue Gate lot on Route 127 runs June–Oct with a paid shuttle to town.
  • Rockport has no bars or liquor stores; restaurants and inns may serve alcohol, so buy wine or beer before you arrive.
  • Many shops, galleries and seasonal restaurants close outside summer and early autumn; check before a winter trip.
  • The granite shore and breakwater are uneven and slippery when wet; stay back from waves in rough weather.
  • Halibut Point charges a parking fee and is a Massachusetts state park; hours run dawn to dusk.
