Rockport is a small Cape Ann town of about 7,000 people, once a granite quarrying centre and later an artists' colony. The harbour, Bearskin Neck shops and the rocky shore at Halibut Point are the whole draw, and the centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day. Most travellers come as a day trip from Boston or as one night on a North Shore loop with Gloucester and Salem.

The centre is walkable: Dock Square to Bearskin Neck is under 5 minutes on foot. The MBTA commuter rail from Boston's North Station takes about 70 minutes and drops you less than a mile from the centre.
