  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Sint Eustatius ↗Entry follows Dutch rules for the Caribbean Netherlands, which differ from Schengen rules: check official Dutch government sources for your passport.
  • Sint Eustatius ↗The waters around the island are a national marine park: dive with licensed operators and follow park rules and fees.

Know before you go

  • The Quill is a dormant volcano about 600 m high. The crater floor is a rainforest with very tall trees, ferns and hanging vines.
  • Allow 3 hours for the crater rim and a loop down, or 4 to 4.5 with the full circuit and photo stops. Numbers are 2026 desk estimates.
  • Start at first light for cooler steps and clear views. Cloud often covers the crater by late morning.
  • The path is muddy after rain and roots and rock are slippery. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
  • A trail or park fee may apply (check with the marine and national parks office). Bring small US cash.
  • Tell your host your start time and expected return. Phone signal drops in the crater.
