Puerto López is a working fishing village on Ecuador's central coast and the boat base for Isla de la Plata, the wildlife island that stands in for the Galápagos at a fraction of the cost. The town itself is small, walkable and cheap; the reason to come is the water, the park and the humpback season from June to September. Two nights covers it; three if you add diving or horseback riding.

Getting around

The town is flat and small: everything except the bus terminal is a walk. Mototaxis (tuc-tucs) cost about $1 in town and about $1 from the terminal. Buses north and south stop on the coastal highway; mototaxis meet them.

Watch out

Safety

Puerto López is a small, low-crime beach town; the real risks are rough seas on island crossings, strong sun, and petty theft of unattended bags on the beach at night.
  • Boat trips to Isla de la Plata are regulated and sold by licensed agencies only: no hiring a fisherman to go instead.
  • Seas can be rough Dec–Apr; trips get cancelled and refunds vary by operator — confirm the policy before paying.
  • Bring cash: many small hotels, food carts and mototaxis do not take cards.
  • Sun at the equator is strong even when cloudy; reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
  • The pier charges about $1 extra per person on island tours.
