Puerto López
Give Puerto López 2 nights: one full day for Isla de la Plata, one for Machalilla park beaches. Come Jun–Sep for whales; skip if you want nightlife.
Puerto López is a working fishing village on Ecuador's central coast and the boat base for Isla de la Plata, the wildlife island that stands in for the Galápagos at a fraction of the cost. The town itself is small, walkable and cheap; the reason to come is the water, the park and the humpback season from June to September. Two nights covers it; three if you add diving or horseback riding.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; women often one cheek kiss; avoid: Skipping the greeting before a question
- Time: Allow for 'hora ecuatoriana' socially; avoid: Assuming tours leave late — they do not
- Photos: Ask people first; avoid: Photographing children without permission
- Dress: Layers in the Andes; avoid: Beachwear in city centres
Scams and watch-outs
- Boat trips to Isla de la Plata are regulated and sold by licensed agencies only: no hiring a fisherman to go instead.
- Seas can be rough Dec–Apr; trips get cancelled and refunds vary by operator — confirm the policy before paying.
- Bring cash: many small hotels, food carts and mototaxis do not take cards.
- Sun at the equator is strong even when cloudy; reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
- The pier charges about $1 extra per person on island tours.
Puerto López is a small, low-crime beach town; the real risks are rough seas on island crossings, strong sun, and petty theft of unattended bags on the beach at night.
