Bydgoszcz is Poland's eighth-largest city, split by the Brda river into a medieval Old Town on the south bank and a 19th-century centre on the north. It kept its 19th-century architecture through the wars, so the draw is the riverside walk, Mill Island's museums and the music halls, not a single headline sight. Most travellers pass through on the Poznań–Gdańsk rail line; one night covers the centre, two adds the Exploseum and Myślęcinek.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Bydgoszcz Główna station to Stary Rynek is about 1 km, 12–15 min on foot. Buses and trams cover the rest; buy tickets at kiosks or machines and validate them on board. City bikes (standard and electric) rent through the ROOVEE app, and a water tram runs as a seasonal attraction.

Safety

A calm, low-crime city; the practical risks are unvalidated transit tickets, thin late-night transport outside the centre and icy pavements in winter. Standard big-city care around the station after dark.
  • Shops cannot sell alcohol between 23:00 and 06:00; bars and restaurants are exempt.
  • Validate your tram or bus ticket in the puncher on board — controllers fine unvalidated tickets.
  • The Exploseum sits in forest in the south-east, well outside the centre: check opening days before you go.
  • Winter days are short and often grey from late October; plan indoor sights.
