Tizimin is a working Yucatán market town of about 80,000 people, 2 h 30 min by bus from Mérida and roughly 3 h from Cancún. Almost nobody comes for Tizimin; they come because the ADO and Noreste terminals sit a few metres apart and the second-class buses to Rio Lagartos and El Cuyo leave from here. Add the 17th-century church, a free zoo, the market and Kulubá ruins, and you have a solid half day between buses.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: plaza to bus terminals is under 10 minutes on foot. Taxis wait outside the ADO terminal and at the plaza; agree the fare before you get in. Yucatán state runs the Va y Ven city bus network in Tizimin (routes 1051–1054). For Kulubá, Rio Lagartos or El Cuyo you need a taxi, a tour or the Noreste bus.

Watch out

Safety

Tizimin is a quiet market town and the usual cautions apply: it is safe by day around the plaza and market, use taxis after dark, keep to lit streets, and treat the highway edges as car territory. The bigger risks are heat, dehydration and unlit roads, not crime.
  • The two bus terminals are on different streets a few metres apart: confirm which one your onward bus leaves from before you buy.
  • Second-class Noreste buses to the coast fill up and stop running in the evening; if you arrive late, plan a night in town.
  • Restrooms at the ADO terminal charge a small fee (about M$7 (≈ under US$1)): carry coins.
  • Kulubá has no shade, no museum and no facilities: bring water, hat and sunblock.
  • Ask taxi fares before boarding, especially for El Cuyo and Kulubá, where the price is negotiated.
