Dodge CityDodge City, Kansas

Give Dodge City one full day and one night: Boot Hill Museum in the morning, downtown and a steak dinner after. Two nights only if you want Fort Dodge and the casino.

Dodge City is a small western-Kansas town (about 28,000 people) built on a short, loud cattle-town past. The sights are few and close together, so it works as a one-night stop on a US-50 road trip or an Amtrak Southwest Chief break, not as a destination week. Come for Boot Hill, the 1870s storefronts and the meatpacking-and-Latino present, not for a theme park.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. Downtown, Boot Hill and the restaurant strip are walkable from each other (10–20 minutes), but Fort Dodge, the casino and the airport are 8–10 km out on US-400/US-50 with no useful bus. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin — book ahead for early Amtrak departures. Parking is free everywhere.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Fort Dodge

go

Door to door: About 20 min each way

Drive US-400 east about 8 km (5 mi)

Former army post (1865–1882) on the Santa Fe Trail; the grounds and cemetery are the draw, and the old buildings are now a veterans' home — check access before you go.

Coronado Cross

caution

Door to door: About 25 min each way

Drive US-400 east past Fort Dodge

A 38-ft cross marking Coronado's 1541 Arkansas River crossing. A five-minute stop, best paired with Fort Dodge.

Garden City

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive US-50 west about 80 km (50 mi)

Bigger town with the Lee Richardson Zoo and more food; a half-day add-on, not a full day.

Liberal

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min each way

Drive US-54/US-83 southwest about 130 km (81 mi)

Coronado Heights and the Land of Oz exhibit; only worth it if you are already heading that way.

Greensburg

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min each way

Drive US-54/US-400 east about 100 km (62 mi)

Rebuilt green town with the Big Well; a good lunch stop on the road east.

Wichita

overnight

Door to door: 2 h 45 min by car

Drive US-50/US-400 east about 250 km (155 mi), or Amtrak

Too far for a return day; sleep there if you are heading east.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

West Wyatt Earp Blvd (US-50 strip)

Almost all the chain hotels and motels sit here, 2–4 km (1.2–2.5 mi) west of downtown. Free parking, drive-up rooms, nothing to walk to at night.

Downtown / Wyatt Earp Blvd core

Holiday Inn Express and a few independents within walking distance of Boot Hill Museum and the shops. Best if you arrive by train and have no car.

Wright Park / KOA area

Campground, cabins and the water park; a half-mile walk to the historic downtown. Summer only for the water park.

Watch out

Safety

Dodge City is a normal small US town and the tourist core is fine on foot in daylight. The real issues are summer heat, long empty drives at night, thin late-night transport and a 21+ casino: lock the car, carry water, and pre-book your ride.
  • Amtrak's Dodge City station has no ticket office or machines: buy and print or download your ticket before you arrive.
  • Eastbound Southwest Chief calls just before midnight, westbound around 05:30 — arrange your lift or taxi the day before.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35 °C (95 °F)+ and thunderstorms build fast; do the outdoor sights before noon.
  • Boot Hill Museum runs summer and off-season hours that differ, and off-season admission is lower: check the official site for your dates.
  • The casino is 21+ and open 24 hours; it is 4 km (2.5 mi) west of downtown, so plan the ride back.
