Trincomalee (Trinco) is Sri Lanka's east-coast season flip: when the south-west coast is wet, this side is dry. The town itself is a compact port with a fort, a Hindu temple on a clifftop and a market; the reason people stay is the beach strip 3–16 km north at Uppuveli and Nilaveli, plus Pigeon Island's reef. Three nights covers the fort, the temple, one snorkelling trip and one slow beach day. Two nights is enough if you only want the beach; more than four only if you are diving or surfing.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable. For Uppuveli, Nilaveli and the fort, use tuk-tuks; PickMe works here and gives you a price to bargain against. Agree the fare before you get in — a rough guide is about Rs 100 per km, and drivers going to Nilaveli often quote a flat price per person. Bicycles rent in Uppuveli for about Rs 1,000 a day, which suits the flat beach road.

3 km north of town on Sarvodaya Rd; guesthouses, beach restaurants and the easiest base without a car. Tuk-tuk to town about 10 min.

Nilaveli

16 km north; quieter, wider beach and the boat point for Pigeon Island. Fewer cheap eats, so you eat where you sleep.

Downtown / Dutch Bay

Cheapest rooms and street food, walking distance to the fort and market, but the town beach is not the reason you came.

South of Fort Fredrick

A small cluster of guesthouses on the beach side; handy for the temple and fort at sunrise.

Watch out

Safety

Trincomalee is calm and used to visitors in season; the real issues are sea conditions outside May–Sep, unlit beach roads at night, and tuk-tuk fares agreed only after you arrive — fix the price first.
  • Plastic waste washes up on the beaches; clean-ups mostly run in high season, so pick your stretch.
  • Coral around Pigeon Island is largely dead as of 2025 — go for the fish and turtles, not the reef.
  • Kanniya Hot Wells: cover shoulders and knees, and bring a towel; changing rooms are basic.
  • Fort Fredrick is an active garrison — stay on the roads and out of marked military areas.
  • Sea can be rough outside May–Sep; check before swimming and never swim past the reef line alone.
