Sokcho is a small east-coast fishing city of about 80,000 people and the practical gateway to Seoraksan National Park, roughly 30 minutes by bus from the centre. Most travellers come for the mountain, then stay for the beach, the squid sundae and the crab market. Two nights covers it; three if you want a slow beach day.

- Seoraksan trails close or turn icy in winter and in heavy rain: check park notices before you set out.
- Crab restaurants can run to about ₩100,000 (≈ US$75) for a crab with sides; the market's takeaway steamed crab is far cheaper.
