Give Greenwich one full day on foot along Greenwich Avenue plus a beach or museum stop; sleep in Stamford or New York unless you want the high-end inns.

Greenwich is a wealthy Fairfield County town on Metro-North, about an hour from Grand Central. The walkable core is Greenwich Avenue and the surrounding historic district; the rest of town is spread across Byram, Cos Cob, Riverside, Old Greenwich and Glenville, and needs a car or taxi. It works as a day trip from New York or as a quiet base for the county.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Central Greenwich is walkable. For Cos Cob, Old Greenwich, Riverside or Glenville use Metro-North (Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich stations), a taxi, or a car. Taxis must be called; they do not cruise for fares.

Watch out

Safety

Crime is well below state and national levels and walking at night is generally calm. The real issues are narrow roads with speeding drivers, beach-pass rules, and Sunday alcohol limits.
  • Alcohol sales are restricted on Sundays and after 9 PM on Saturdays under Connecticut blue laws (check current rules); buy earlier or cross into Port Chester, New York.
  • Greenwich Point beach requires a beach pass for non-residents; buy one at the community centre behind the First Presbyterian Church (check current rules and price).
  • Swimming conditions at Great Captain Island and Greenwich Point vary by season and tide; check local advisories before you swim.
  • Side streets are narrow and some drivers speed; walk facing traffic where there is no pavement.
