White Plains is Westchester County's seat and its business core, not a sightseeing town. What it does well is logistics: an express Metro-North ride into Manhattan, a small airport (HPN) 10 min away, malls, and a walkable downtown of hotels and restaurants. Use it as a bed base for the Hudson Valley villages, or as a half-day stop between trains.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: station, City Center, The Westchester and most hotels sit within about 15 min on foot. Bee-Line buses cover the county and Stamford; taxis wait at the train station and are otherwise by appointment. A car helps for the parks and villages, but I-287 is often congested.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown White Plains is busy and generally safe by day and evening; the usual US city cautions apply. Keep to lit streets around the station and Mamaroneck Ave at night, and do not leave bags in a parked car.
  • Two Harlem-line stations: White Plains and North White Plains. Board for the right one.
  • I-287 construction causes frequent delays; allow extra time to HPN and to I-95.
  • HPN has no long-haul flights: transatlantic trips route via JFK, Newark or Boston.
  • Summer weekends fill county parks and pools early; arrive before mid-morning.
