LargoLargo, Florida

Base in Largo only if you have a car and want a quiet, cheaper bed 15–25 min from the beaches: 1–2 nights, not a beach holiday.

Largo is a residential city in the middle of Pinellas County, between Clearwater and St. Petersburg, about 10 km inland from the Gulf. It has no beach of its own. What it does have is the Florida Botanical Gardens, a large central park, free parking and hotel rates well below the beach towns. Travellers use it as a car-based base for the whole county, or skip it entirely.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Largo is spread out along Ulmerton Road and East Bay Drive (east–west) and Clearwater-Largo Road/Ridge Road, Missouri Avenue/Seminole Boulevard, Keene Road and Belcher Road (north–south). Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) buses link Largo with Clearwater, St. Petersburg and the beaches, but trips are slow and often need a change. Rideshares work but surge at beach closing time.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 20–35 min

Car or PSTA bus west on SR 60 via Clearwater

The nearest real beach; go early, parking fills by mid-morning in season.

Door to door: 25–40 min

Car south on I-275 or US 19, or PSTA bus

Museums, the Pier and a walkable downtown; a full day or an evening.

Door to door: 20–30 min

Car north on US 19 Alt/Belcher Rd to SR 580

Small downtown, Pinellas Trail and Honeymoon Island causeway.

Tarpon Springs

go

Door to door: 30–40 min

Car north on US 19, about 20 km (12 mi)

Sponge docks and Greek restaurants; half a day is enough.

Door to door: 30–40 min

Car south via Seminole Blvd and the Pinellas Bayway

Wider sand and calmer water than Clearwater on windy days.

Safety Harbor

caution

Door to door: 20–25 min

Car north on McMullen Booth Rd

Pleasant small downtown and spa; limited parking at weekends.

Palm Harbor

skip

Door to door: 25–35 min

Car north on US 19

Mostly residential; only worth it for a specific restaurant or the Pinellas Trail.

Watch out

Safety

Largo is a normal suburban city; the real risks are traffic on the arterials, summer heat and storms, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car at the beaches. Petty theft from cars is the most common issue.
  • No beach in Largo: the sand is 15–25 min west in Clearwater, Indian Rocks Beach or St. Pete Beach.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy thunderstorms and lightning; plan indoor stops 14:00–17:00.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check local advisories and know your evacuation zone.
  • Sidewalks are missing on many arterials; driving or rideshare beats walking along Ulmerton Road.
