Largo
Largo, Florida
Base in Largo only if you have a car and want a quiet, cheaper bed 15–25 min from the beaches: 1–2 nights, not a beach holiday.
Largo is a residential city in the middle of Pinellas County, between Clearwater and St. Petersburg, about 10 km inland from the Gulf. It has no beach of its own. What it does have is the Florida Botanical Gardens, a large central park, free parking and hotel rates well below the beach towns. Travellers use it as a car-based base for the whole county, or skip it entirely.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: Largo is spread out along Ulmerton Road and East Bay Drive (east–west) and Clearwater-Largo Road/Ridge Road, Missouri Avenue/Seminole Boulevard, Keene Road and Belcher Road (north–south). Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) buses link Largo with Clearwater, St. Petersburg and the beaches, but trips are slow and often need a change. Rideshares work but surge at beach closing time.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No beach in Largo: the sand is 15–25 min west in Clearwater, Indian Rocks Beach or St. Pete Beach.
- Summer afternoons bring heavy thunderstorms and lightning; plan indoor stops 14:00–17:00.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check local advisories and know your evacuation zone.
- Sidewalks are missing on many arterials; driving or rideshare beats walking along Ulmerton Road.
Largo is a normal suburban city; the real risks are traffic on the arterials, summer heat and storms, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car at the beaches. Petty theft from cars is the most common issue.
