North ReadingNorth Reading, Massachusetts

Skip as a base: North Reading is a half-day stop for Harold Parker State Forest and Ipswich River Park. Sleep in Reading or Andover and drive in.

North Reading is a 15,000-person town in the southern Merrimack Valley, 25 km north of Boston off Interstate 93. It has no hotel district and no rail station of its own: the MBTA Haverhill Line stops at Reading and Andover, and you finish the trip by car or rideshare. Come for the 3,000-acre Harold Parker State Forest, the town recreation park, and a handful of Main Street restaurants, then move on.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-93 Exits 39 (Concord Street) and 40 (Route 62), and I-95/Route 128 Exit 40. The MBTA Haverhill Line reaches Reading and Andover only, so the last leg is a taxi or rideshare. Local roads are two-lane and dark at night.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime suburban town; the real risks are winter driving on Route 62 and Concord Street, dark unlit roads at night, and thin rideshare coverage after about 22:00.
  • No rail station in town: plan the Reading or Andover connection before you book.
  • Winter ice on Route 62 and Concord Street; carry a scraper and check road conditions.
  • Harold Parker State Forest gates and campground are seasonal: check before driving out.
  • Rideshares are thin late at night; keep a taxi number.
