Mandarmani is a 6 km stretch of sand in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, about 3.5–4 hours by road from Kolkata. It is a resort beach, not a town: hotels line the shore, the nearest railway station is Contai, and the nearest airport is Kolkata. Two nights covers the beach, the mohana river delta and Tajpur. Come between October and February; the rest of the year is hot, wet or both.

You walk between your resort and the beach. For anything longer, hire a car or a toto (small local vehicle); driving on the sand is prohibited now. The Mandarmani–Tajpur road links the two beaches.

Watch out

Safety

The beach itself is calm and low-crime; the real risks are unlit approach roads after dark, soft sand under cars, high tide cutting the beach width, and generator-only power at some resorts.
  • No street lighting on the village approach roads: finish the Chawalkhola–Mandarmani stretch before dark.
  • High tide takes up roughly a quarter of the beach width by 7–8 pm; carry a torch and do not walk the mohana after dark.
  • Cars get stuck in soft sand near the beach road; do not stop on it.
  • Alcohol near the beach sells at close to double normal market price.
  • Agree crab and prawn prices before ordering.
