Saint-Barnabé is a parish municipality in the Maskinongé Region of Basse-Mauricie, about 133 km and 1 h 30 min by car from Montréal on Highway 40 plus Route 153. The economy is agriculture, the sights are the flat St. Lawrence plain, old barns and farm buildings along the rang roads, and there is no hotel. Come for a short scenic loop and a casse-croûte, then sleep in Louiseville, Yamachiche or Trois-Rivières.

Getting around

You need a car. The village sits on Route 153, and the interesting roads — rang du Haut St-Joseph, rang du Bas St-Joseph, route des Dalles, chemin de la Grande Rivière, rang de Bellechasse, route Bournival — are farm lanes with no bus service. Snowmobiles and ATVs are allowed on some routes in season. Fuel and a convenience store are at the Harnois station, 811 rue Notre-Dame.

Very safe: this is farmland, not a tourist town. The real risks are driving the rang roads at dusk when deer and tractors are out, and winter ice on Route 153.
  • No public transport: without a car you are stuck.
  • Farm machinery on the rang roads, especially at haying; pass wide and slow.
  • No hotel in the village — book in Louiseville or Trois-Rivières before you arrive.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the back rangs; download your map.
  • Winter driving on Route 153 is snow-covered and icy; snow tires are required in Québec in winter.
