Valleyview is a town of about 1,900 people at the junction of Highway 43 and Highway 49 in Alberta's Peace Country, roughly 350 km northwest of Edmonton. It exists for travellers as a bed, a meal and a fuel stop on the way to Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek or the Alaska Highway. The one real draw is Sturgeon Lake and its two provincial parks, 20-26 km west.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small but spread along the highway, and Sturgeon Lake's parks are 20-26 km west with no useful public transport. Fuel up here before the long empty stretch west or north.

Safety

A quiet highway town with no real street-crime problem. The genuine risks are winter driving, wildlife on the road and long distances between services: carry water, a blanket and a full tank.
  • Winter driving: Highway 43 can ice up and blow snow between Whitecourt and Valleyview; check road reports before setting out.
  • Long gaps between services west toward Grande Prairie and north on Highway 49; fill the tank in town.
  • Cell coverage thins out on the side roads around Sturgeon Lake.
  • Wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, especially deer and moose.
