Atlanta is a village of about 750 people in Montmorency County, northern Michigan, and calls itself the Elk Capital of Michigan. It is a base for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and the Sno*Drift rally, not a sightseeing town. You need a car; two nights covers the elk viewing, Clear Lake State Park and a loop of the surrounding state forest.

Getting around

A car is required. M-32 runs east–west and M-33 north–south through the village; fuel up in Atlanta, Gaylord or Lewiston, because stations thin out on the forest roads. Winter tyres or all-wheel drive are worth it from December to March.

Safety

Low crime and a quiet village; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, winter driving on unplowed forest roads, and no phone signal where you need it.
  • Cell coverage drops on forest roads; download offline maps before you leave the village.
  • Elk are large and fast: watch at dawn and dusk and never approach them.
  • Hunting seasons in November mean orange clothing is advised if you walk in state forest.
  • Many kitchens close by 20:00–21:00 and some motels shut in winter — call ahead.
  • Distances look short on the map but forest roads are slow and can be soft in spring.
