Petoskey sits on Little Traverse Bay in northwest Michigan, at the junction of US 31 and US 131, about 40 minutes south of the Mackinac Bridge. It is a small lakeside town with a walkable downtown, a shoreline path, and easy access to Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and Bay Harbor. Most visitors come for summer lake days or winter skiing, and nearly all of them drive here.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: taxi service is limited and sights are spread along US 31. Downtown itself is walkable, and the Little Traverse Wheelway path runs along the shore toward Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. Traffic is light except on summer weekends.

Petoskey is a low-crime small town and safe for tourists. The real risks are winter road ice, cold lake water, and summer weekend traffic on US 31.
  • Summer weekends and holidays fill hotels and beaches: book ahead.
  • Winter driving on US 31 and M-119 can be icy; check conditions.
  • Lake Michigan water stays cold even in August — expect a quick swim, not a long one.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on back roads north of Harbor Springs.
