Tavira
Give Tavira 2 nights: one full day for the old town and castle, one for the island beach. Skip it as a base if you want nightlife or a car-free beach strip.
Tavira is the quiet east-Algarve town: a walkable centre split by the Gilão river, a castle hill with 37 churches around it, and a sand-bar island beach reached by ferry. It suits slow travellers, couples and families who want a real town rather than a resort strip. Two nights covers it; three if you add Cabanas or Santa Luzia.
