- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Fort Bragg is the largest town on California's Lost Coast, about 7,400 people on a harbour that is the only safe one for 160 km in either direction. It is a working town turned low-key coast base: cheaper beds than Mendocino, a walkable Main Street, and the coast road north and south as the real attraction. Come by car; the town itself is small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Main Street, Glass Beach and the harbour are all within about 30 minutes on foot. MTA's BraggAbout bus loops the busiest parts of town hourly for a small fare; the Coaster bus runs the coast to Mendocino and Albion a few times a day. For the redwoods, the lighthouse or the coast road you need a car — Enterprise on E Chestnut St is the only rental desk in town.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Mendocino
goDoor to door: About 20–30 min
Drive CA 1 south about 15 min, or MTA Coaster bus
Headlands walk, galleries and a drink with a view; go early, parking is tight.
Willits
goDoor to door: About 1 h
Drive CA 20 east about 35 mi, or MTA bus
The inland gateway to US 101; useful if you are heading to or from the redwoods.
Point Arena
cautionDoor to door: About 1.5 h
Drive CA 1 south about 1 h 30 min
Lighthouse and a historic cinema, but the drive is slow and fog-prone; make it a half day.
Gualala
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h 45 min
Drive CA 1 south about 1 h 45 min
River mouth and bluffs; combine with Point Arena rather than doing both separately.
Ukiah
skipDoor to door: About 1 h 40 min
Drive CA 253 or CA 20 to US 101, or MTA bus
Inland wine country; only worth it if you are routing to US 101 anyway.
