Willits is a small Highway 101 town of about 4,900 people, 135 mi (about 3 h) north of San Francisco, where Highway 20 turns west to Fort Bragg. Downtown is a flat half-mile loop of shops, a 1930s cinema and a county museum; the draw for most travellers is the Skunk Train and a bed between the Bay Area and the redwoods. It works as a stop, not a destination week.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: the shop-and-gallery loop from the Heart of the Redwoods arch to the Center for the Arts is under half a mile on flat ground. For anything else you need a car — the Skunk Train depot, the museum and the motels on S. Main St are spread along the highway. The Mendocino Transit Authority runs the local Willits Rider route and regional buses; Greyhound stops at 1488 S Main St but sells no tickets there, so buy online.

Safety

Willits is a small, low-crime town and the usual risks are practical: highway traffic on Main Street, long drives on winding roads, summer heat inland and winter rain. Keep valuables out of sight in a parked car and carry water on Highway 20.
  • US-101 runs through town as Main Street: expect highway traffic and trucks, and cross with care.
  • Many small shops keep short or seasonal hours and some close on Sundays — check before you plan a shopping afternoon.
  • Summer afternoons inland can hit the high 30s °C; winter brings rain and occasional highway closures north of town.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 20 west toward Fort Bragg and on back roads.
