  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Coronado is a small, walkable resort town on a peninsula across San Diego Bay, reached by bridge, ferry or the Silver Strand from Imperial Beach. The draw is the 1888 Hotel del Coronado, a long white-sand beach and a calm, low-rise main street. Most visitors see it as a day trip from San Diego; one night lets you catch the beach at sunset and the ferry back without rushing.

Getting around

The town is flat and small: walk or rent a bike. The Coronado Ferry runs from Broadway Pier and the Convention Center to the Ferry Landing, $4.25 one-way.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US resort town; the real issues are rip currents, sunburn, summer parking and the marine layer, not crime. Lock bikes and keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
  • Parking near Central Beach fills by mid-morning in summer; free street parking along Ocean Blvd goes first.
  • The beach is seasonal-lifeguarded only — check flags and rip-current warnings before swimming.
  • North Island naval base is active military land: no access, and some roads and beaches are closed to the public.
  • Summer marine layer can keep mornings grey until 11:00; afternoons usually clear.
