Ixtenco is a small Otomí town in Tlaxcala, one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, with a 17th-century parish church, a tree-shaded plaza and a corn museum. Almost everything sits within a few blocks of the Zócalo. It works as a half-day stop on the way to Huamantla or La Malinche, not as a base: hotel choice in town is close to nil.

Getting around

The centro is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. A taxi sitio sits at Plaza de la Constitución for trips out of town, including the Xalapasco trailhead about 2.5 km west. No local bus network worth using.

Watch out

Safety

Ixtenco is a quiet small town and the centro is calm by day. The usual Mexico rules apply: use 911, keep to lit streets after dark, and take taxis rather than walking the highway at night.
  • Beds in town are scarce: book Huamantla or a hacienda before you arrive.
  • The ATAH bus stop is about 5 km north of town, in Huamantla municipality: arrange a taxi or walk with a plan.
  • June–September is the rainy season; afternoon storms are common on the La Malinche trails.
  • Museum signs are mostly Spanish; ask for the guided tour if you do not read Spanish.
