  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Cupertino is a residential tech suburb at the south end of San Francisco Bay, home to Apple's two campuses and a large Chinese-American community. There is no main street and no walkable centre: most businesses sit in strip malls along De Anza and Stevens Creek Boulevards. Treat it as a half-day or one-night stop inside a wider South Bay trip, not a destination on its own.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: De Anza Blvd runs north–south, Stevens Creek Blvd east–west, and Highways 85 and 280 cross the city. VTA buses serve the main corridors but run infrequently and rarely door to door; expect 30–50 min for trips a car does in 10. Streets have bike lanes and biking on the flat grid is reasonably safe. Rideshare is easy to hail but fares spike at commute hours.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

I-280 north then Page Mill Rd, or Caltrain from Sunnyvale

University Avenue is the closest thing to a walkable downtown in this part of the peninsula.

I-280 to Highway 101, or VTA

Mission Santa Clara and Levi's Stadium; combine with a San Jose day.

Caltrain station and a compact downtown; useful if you are skipping a car.

Gilroycaution

Door to door: 35–45 min by car

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

North De Anza Blvd / Vallco area

The main hotel cluster: Cupertino Inn, Juniper Hotel, Aloft. Walkable to Apple Park Visitor Center and a short drive to restaurants.

North Wolfe Rd

Courtyard, Hilton Garden Inn and Hyatt House; closest to Cupertino Village for dinner and to Highway 280.

Sunnyvale or Santa Clara (outside Cupertino)

Better value and a real downtown; Caltrain at Sunnyvale, 10–15 min by car to Cupertino.

Downtown San Jose (outside Cupertino)

The widest hotel choice and evening life in the South Bay; 20–25 min by car or VTA light rail plus bus.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe: violent crime is rare and the streets are quiet at night. The real risks are trail ticks, summer heat on exposed hikes, mountain lions in the western foothills and strict traffic enforcement.
  • Almost nothing is walkable: plan each stop by car or rideshare, not on foot.
  • Apple Park itself is fenced and screened by trees and a mound; only the Visitor Center on the east side is open to the public.
  • Check for ticks after hiking in the foothills; Bay Area Lyme disease rates are high. See a doctor if a bull's-eye rash appears.
  • Mountain lions have been reported in the western foothills; hike in daylight and keep children close.
  • Obey traffic laws: enforcement on local streets is active and fines are steep.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 30 °C; carry water on any hike.
