Whitefish is a small railroad town of about 6,400 people at the south end of Whitefish Lake, in Montana's Flathead Valley. It works as a base for Glacier National Park (about 43 km east on US-2) and for Whitefish Mountain Resort, 11 km north of downtown. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in the centre of town, so you can arrive by train without a car, but a car makes the park and the resort much easier.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and bike-friendly. For the resort, the lake and Glacier National Park you need a car, or the seasonal SNOW Bus in winter. Eagle Transit's Mountain Climber runs local buses between Whitefish, Kalispell and Columbia Falls on weekdays for about $1 a ride (check schedules).

Watch out

Safety

Whitefish is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Big Mountain Road, wildlife on trails, and drinking downtown where last call runs late.
  • Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road is usually closed by snow from about mid-October to late June: check the park's road status before you drive.
  • Some park areas and the Going-to-the-Sun Road require a vehicle reservation in summer: book on the official park site.
  • Winter driving on Big Mountain Road can be icy; carry chains or have an AWD rental.
  • Bear country: carry bear spray on trails and store food properly at camp.
  • Cell coverage is patchy outside town and in the park.
