Kalispell is the largest town in the Flathead Valley and the practical service base for Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake: motels, big-box stores, a hospital and the valley's main road junction. It is not a sightseeing town. Come for a bed, supplies and a car, then drive out each day. Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) sits 10 mi northeast on US-2.

A car is close to essential: sights are 15–60 mi apart and buses are limited. Mountain Climber is the county on-demand transit service; Greyhound runs along US-93 to Whitefish and Missoula. Walk or bike downtown, drive everywhere else.

Safety

Kalispell is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving on two-lane roads, wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, and summer heat on exposed trails. Carry bear spray in Glacier and never leave food in the car.
  • No public transport from FCA into town: book a rental car or a taxi before you land.
  • Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass is usually closed mid-October to late June: check status before planning a Glacier day.
  • Winter roads outside town are two-lane and icy; allow extra time and check conditions.
  • Summer lodging in the valley sells out weeks ahead and prices spike: book early.
