Western Barbados runs north from Bridgetown through Saint James, Saint Peter and Saint Lucy: Holetown and Speightstown are the two main settlements, joined by one congested coast road. The water here is the most sheltered on the island, calm enough for families most days, and the hotel strip is the densest and priciest in the country. Come for swimming, snorkelling and easy resort logistics, not for a cheap trip or a walkable town.

Getting around

One coast road (Highway 1B) carries the buses: route 1 from Bridgetown's Princess Alice Terminal to Holetown and Speightstown every 30–60 min, plus frequent minibuses. Route 1E crosses to Bathsheba on the east coast every couple of hours daily. The coast road is narrow with poor sidewalks, so walk short hops only; use a minibus for any distance and a taxi or tour for inland sights such as Harrison's Cave.

Mid-coast hub: supermarket, Limegrove Mall, restaurants and the densest hotel cluster. Best for a first trip without a car.

Paynes Bay / Fitts Village

Between Holetown and Bridgetown; beachfront resorts plus smaller guesthouses a few blocks inland at lower rates.

Speightstown

Quieter northern port with an old centre, local food and fewer big hotels; good if you want a town feel.

Saint Peter / Saint Lucy north

Villas and small properties near Animal Flower Cave and Farley Hill; you need a car or taxi for everything.

Watch out

Safety

One of the safer Caribbean destinations, with the usual city precautions. The real risks are the Atlantic swell, sun exposure, and the narrow, unlit coast road at night: take a taxi after dark rather than walking the highway.
  • The sea is the Atlantic, not the Caribbean: it is usually calm inshore but can turn rough — heed red flags.
  • The coast road is narrow, congested at rush hour and has poor sidewalks; walking along it is not pleasant.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; travel insurance and flexible bookings matter in Sep–Oct.
  • US dollars are widely accepted at BBD 2 = US$1, but change is often given in Barbadian dollars.
  • A 10% service charge is often already on restaurant bills — check before adding a tip.
