  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Chile ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Chile's National Migration Service or a Chilean consulate; keep the entry slip or digital record you receive.
  • Chile ↗Torres del Paine: campsites and refugios on the W and O treks must be booked in advance, and the park requires an entry ticket bought ahead; check the official park (CONAF) channels.
  • Chile ↗Chile strictly controls food imports: declare fruit, meat, dairy, seeds and honey on arrival, or throw them away before customs.

Valparaíso is a UNESCO-listed port city about 120 km west of Santiago, built on steep hills above the Pacific. The old town is small enough to walk in a day, but the hills, the nightlife and the slow mornings reward one or two nights. Most travellers pair it with Viña del Mar next door.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the hills; the ascensores and staircases connect El Plan with the cerros. Metro Valparaíso (Merval) runs along the coast to Viña del Mar and Limache, roughly 06:00–23:30; you need a rechargeable card, single tickets are not sold. Colectivos (black with yellow roofs) run fixed routes. Local micros cost a few hundred pesos.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Viña del Mar

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Merval from Valparaíso station, about 15 min

Beach, gardens and a calmer evening; easy half-day.

Bus from the terminal near the National Congress, about 1.5 h

Frequent departures; congestion can add an hour.

Pichilemu

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

Bus via Santiago or San Antonio, 3–4 h

Surf town; too far for a return day.

Valle Nevado

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

Bus or car via Santiago, 3–4 h

Ski season only, roughly Jun–Sep.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción

The postcard hills: hostels, boutique hotels, cafés and murals. Steep stairs everywhere; best for a first visit.

El Plan (flat centre)

Plaza Sotomayor, the port and the market. Cheaper, no hills, but quieter at night.

Cerro Bellavista

Near La Sebastiana and Avenida Alemana; good views, fewer services.

Viña del Mar

Modern beach city 15 min north by Merval; use it if you want a beach and a calmer base.

Watch out

Safety

Valparaíso is fine by day on the main hills; at night stay on lit streets, avoid empty staircases and keep phones out of sight. Petty theft is the main risk, not violence.
  • Some ascensores are closed for repairs or no longer run: check before you climb.
  • Do not leave bags visible in a car, and keep phones out of sight on empty staircases at night.
  • Drinking alcohol in the street is not allowed; minimum age is 18.
  • Summer (Dec–Feb) crowds triple around New Year; book beds ahead.
  • Earthquake country: know the exit from your building.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Plaza Sotomayor, Cerro Alegre–Concepción, Cerro Bellavista–La Sebastiana, Mercado Cardonal.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (La Sebastiana, Museo Naval, Baburizza, Museo de Historia Natural) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Ascensor status fixture so the funicular block can go green.
