Valparaíso
Give Valparaíso 1–2 nights, not a day trip: stay on Cerro Alegre or Concepción, ride one working ascensor, and walk the murals at opening time.
Valparaíso is a UNESCO-listed port city about 120 km west of Santiago, built on steep hills above the Pacific. The old town is small enough to walk in a day, but the hills, the nightlife and the slow mornings reward one or two nights. Most travellers pair it with Viña del Mar next door.
