Mettupalayam
Half a day or a night: Mettupalayam is the gateway to the Nilgiris by the toy train, not a destination itself. Stop for the Black Thunder water park or the Bhadrakaliamman temple, then move on to Ooty or Coonoor.
Mettupalayam sits at the foot of the Nilgiris, 45 km from Coimbatore airport. Most travellers pass through to catch the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (the toy train) to Ooty. The town itself has a water park, a temple and a few local food stops — enough for a half-day pause, not a base.
