Drumshanbo is a small Leitrim town of about 1,240 people at the south end of Lough Allen, on the Shannon navigation and the Shannon Blueway. It works as a one-night stop for walkers, boaters and cyclists, or as a day trip from Carrick-on-Shannon 14 km south. The distillery, the boardwalk and the Arigna mine are the reasons to come; the town itself is 100 m of street.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes. Everything else needs wheels: there is no local taxi, and one would have to come from Carrick-on-Shannon. Local Link buses reach Carrick, Manorhamilton, Sligo and Boyle, but frequencies are low and Sunday service is thin. Bring or hire a car, or plan around the bus timetable.

The only real centre: pubs, shop, ATM and the bus stop by the library. Walk to everything.

Lough Allen shore (Corrachuill)

Hotel and caravan/camping pitches by the water, about 1.5 km north of Main Street; no footpath the whole way, so you want a car or a lift.

Keadue and Ballyfarnon

Village beds 9–10 km west, near Kilronan Castle; quiet, and you must drive to dinner in Drumshanbo.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are the weather, unlit roads with no footpath, and driving single-track lanes after a few drinks: the pub is often the only evening option, so decide the driver first.
  • No taxi based in town; book any lift from Carrick in advance.
  • Sunday and winter bus frequencies drop sharply; check the Local Link timetable the day before.
  • Arigna mine is cold and damp underground: bring a jacket.
  • The Lough Allen shore road has no footpath for the last stretch; do not walk it after dark.
  • Sit-down restaurants are scarce; most evenings are pub food or a takeaway.
