Major city · Ukraine

DniproДніпро

Skip Dnipro unless you have a reason to be there: no flights, no published trip line for Ukraine, and your own government's travel advice decides first.

Dnipro is a large industrial city on the Dnieper, built around a Soviet military industry that barred foreigners until the 1990s. Its centre is a walkable line of pre-revolutionary, Stalinist and constructivist buildings along Prospekt Dmytra Yavornytskoho, with the river and Monastyrskyi Island at the east end. Ukraine's airspace is closed, so arrival is by long train from Kyiv or the west, and the city is a working city first and a sightseeing city second.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
  • Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Getting around

One metro line, plus trams, trolleybuses and buses; single rides are cheap (bus about 15 грн, tram/trolleybus/metro about 8 грн — check current fares). Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt, Uklon and others) are the easy option for point-to-point trips. Schedules are posted by the city transport operator and on mapping apps.

Tsentralnyi / Prospekt area

The centre: hotels, cafés and the main boulevard on foot. Best if you are here one or two nights without a car.

Near Dnipro Holovnyi station

Practical for a late train in or an early train out; a short ride from the centre.

Left bank (Livoberezhnyi)

Cheaper, residential, metro-linked; you cross the river for the sights.

Watch out

Safety

This desk does not plan around the security situation in Ukraine. Read your own government's travel advice first; if you go, keep alerts on, know your shelter, and treat curfews as fixed.
  • No published trip line for Ukraine: read your own government's travel advice before booking anything.
  • Airspace is closed; plan rail or road, and expect long journey times.
  • Air-raid alerts and curfews can apply — follow local instructions and shelter when told.
  • Industrial pollution is real, especially in the eastern districts.
  • Use the official name Dnipro; the Soviet-era form is politically loaded.
