KhorogХоруғ

Khorog is the Pamir Highway hub in the east; plan it only as part of a Pamir trip: 1–2 nights, about 12 hours by shared taxi from Dushanbe or a weather-dependent flight.

Khorog is the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) in the Pamir mountains, at about 2,200 m, at the confluence of the Gunt and Shakhdara rivers. It is a supply stop for travellers on the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan Valley. Services are basic and prices are higher than in Dushanbe. Trips may need a GBAO permit and depend on road and security conditions, so check before you commit.

  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Tajikistan ↗Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
  • Tajikistan ↗Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
  • Tajikistan ↗Land borders, including those with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, have been closed or restricted at times: confirm the current status before you plan an overland leg.

Safety

Check your government's current travel advice before booking; the main risks are road conditions, altitude, weather and the Afghan border area.
  • A GBAO permit may be required (part of the e-visa in some cases); confirm current rules and arrange it before entering the region.
  • Altitude and road conditions are demanding; ascend gradually and carry warm layers.
  • Border areas with Afghanistan: check your government's travel advice and current local conditions before travelling.
  • Unrest, closures or internet outages in GBAO have happened; check the current situation and keep offline maps.
  • Cash is needed outside town; ATMs may be out of service, so bring dollars or somoni.
  • Winter roads may close and flights can be cancelled; build slack into your schedule.
