Sidney, OhioSidney

Go for one night as an I-75 stop, or a half-day from Dayton: Sullivan's 1917 bank, the historical center, the canal path. No bus or train.

Sidney is a small Shelby County seat on the flat Miami valley plain, founded as a canal town in the 1830s and named after the poet Philip Sidney. Its one real sight is a Louis Sullivan bank from 1917; the rest is a county historical center, a Gothic Revival farmstead and a bike path. There is no bus or train service, so you need a car, and most travellers see it as a stop between Dayton and Lima rather than a base.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no bus or train into Sidney and no local transit worth planning around. Downtown is small enough to walk once parked, and the Canal Feeder bike path runs from southern Sidney to just south of downtown at Graceland Cemetery.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small city; the main risks are driving (flat, icy winter roads, deer at dusk) and long empty stretches between towns. 911 works everywhere.
  • No bus or train service to Sidney: without a car you are limited to taxis or a hire.
  • Winter ice and summer heat are the real hazards; the town is flat and exposed.
  • Small-town hours: many downtown businesses close by early evening and on Sundays — check before you drive in.
