Thane sits on the Central Railway line 30–40 min from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and is where India's first passenger train ran in 1853. It is a working city of about 1.9 million people with 30-odd lakes, a 1750 temple and a 400-year-old church around Masunda Lake, plus Upvan Lake under the Yeoor hills. Most travellers pass through; a half-day or one night is enough.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws are the main way around and run on the meter, but the fare is the meter reading scaled by a factor on the RTO tariff card — agree a lump sum before you sit. Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) buses cover the city; Mumbai's BEST buses stop at Teen Hath Naka (Marathon Chowk). Mumbai auto-rickshaws cannot enter Thane city limits, so you change vehicles at the toll gate.

Thane is a busy commuter city and generally safe by day, but the real risks are traffic, tampered auto meters and monsoon flooding — fix fares before you sit and avoid the Central line at rush hour with bags.
  • Auto meters are often tampered with: fix the fare first or check the stamped RTO tariff card.
  • Avoid Central line trains 8–11am and 6–8pm if you have luggage.
  • Monsoon flooding and potholes on LBS Marg; use the Eastern Express Highway instead.
