Onitsha is a trading city on the east bank of the Niger, home to one of West Africa's largest markets and the ceremonial seat of the Obi of Onitsha. Sights are few and spread out, the air is heavy, and hotel stock is thin. Most travellers pass through on the Lagos–Enugu corridor, or use it as a half-day stop between Awka and Asaba.

Getting around

Keke (tricycle) and shared taxi cover almost everything; agree the fare before you board and carry small naira notes. Distances inside the city are short but traffic on the bridge and Awka Road can double any trip. Walking works for the market–palace cluster only.

Watch out

Safety

Onitsha is a busy commercial city, not a resort: petty theft in the markets, aggressive driving and poor air are the everyday risks. Check your government's advice for Anambra State, avoid travel after dark outside the centre, and keep a charged phone with a local SIM.
  • Air quality is poor; the WHO ranked Onitsha among the world's most polluted cities in 2016 — anyone with asthma should plan around it.
  • Main Market is crowded and pickpocketing happens; keep phones out of hand and bags in front.
  • Do not photograph police or military checkpoints, and expect several on the bridge and expressway.
  • Flooding on the Niger floodplain can close roads in the wet season (roughly Jun–Oct).
  • Check your government's current travel advice for Anambra State before booking; some advisories cover parts of the south-east.
