Miyakonojo都城
Half a day to one night: the Shimazu Residence and Gassan Hiwa Castle are the main draws; use it as a stop between Kirishima and Miyazaki.
Miyakonojo is a mid-sized city in southern Miyazaki Prefecture, on the JR Nippo line between Kirishima and Miyazaki. Its two main sights—the preserved Shimazu Residence and the reconstructed Gassan Hiwa Castle—can be seen in a few hours. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kirishima's hot springs or Miyazaki's coast.
