Legnano

Skip as a base: Legnano is a 20 km (12 mi) Milan commuter town with one basilica, one castle and a battle story — see it in 3–4 hours or not at all.

Legnano is a Lombard town of about 60,000 people on the Olona river, 20 km northwest of central Milan on the Porto Ceresio–Milan railway. It is the only town besides Rome named in the Italian national anthem, because of the 1176 Battle of Legnano, and it still runs the Palio di Legnano each year. Its sights — the Basilica of San Magno, the 13th-century castle and the archaeological museum — fill a half day, not a trip. Most travellers use it as a cheap, quiet bed for Milan or Malpensa rather than a destination.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Legnano has a station on the Porto Ceresio–Milan line, with frequent trains to Milan and toward Busto Arsizio and Gallarate. Local buses cover the outer districts; the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi passes the town for drivers. Taxis are few — book ahead or use an app.

Centre (around Piazza San Magno and Corso Magenta)

Walk to the basilica, shops and most restaurants; the station is 5–10 min on foot.

Near the station / Corso Sempione

Best for a one-night Milan or Malpensa stop; chain and business hotels, easy parking.

Castle park side (south of the centre)

Quieter, greener, 15–20 min walk from the station; few places to eat after dark.

Watch out

Safety

Legnano is a low-risk commuter town; the real annoyances are pickpockets on packed Milan-bound trains, ZTL cameras in the centre and restaurants that close without notice on their rest day.
  • Commuter trains into Milan are packed at 07:00–09:00 and 17:30–19:30; travel off-peak with bags.
  • The centre is a ZTL camera zone — do not drive into it without a permit.
  • Many restaurants close one weekday (often Tuesday) and shut between lunch and dinner; check before you walk over.
  • Sunday and August: several independent shops and trattorias close.
