Legnano
Skip as a base: Legnano is a 20 km Milan commuter town with one basilica, one castle and a battle story — see it in 3–4 hours or not at all.
Legnano is a Lombard town of about 60,000 people on the Olona river, 20 km northwest of central Milan on the Porto Ceresio–Milan railway. It is the only town besides Rome named in the Italian national anthem, because of the 1176 Battle of Legnano, and it still runs the Palio di Legnano each year. Its sights — the Basilica of San Magno, the 13th-century castle and the archaeological museum — fill a half day, not a trip. Most travellers use it as a cheap, quiet bed for Milan or Malpensa rather than a destination.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Legnano has a station on the Porto Ceresio–Milan line, with frequent trains to Milan and toward Busto Arsizio and Gallarate. Local buses cover the outer districts; the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi passes the town for drivers. Taxis are few — book ahead or use an app.
