Give Kretinga half a day: the monastery, museum and sundial are a 2 km walk. Sleep in Palanga or Klaipėda unless you want the €50 manor-side rooms.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Lithuania ↗Lithuania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Lithuanian sources for your passport.
  • Lithuania ↗Borders with Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad region are not routes for casual travel; check your government's advice first.
  • Lithuania ↗The Curonian Spit is a protected national park: cars pay an entry fee, and the Russian half of the spit is a separate border.

Kretinga is a small west-Lithuanian town 13 km from Palanga and 26 km from Klaipėda, with a 1605 Franciscan monastery, a manor museum and a 1610 sundial. It is a half-day stop on the Palanga–Klaipėda axis, not a base: the sights sit in one compact centre and the coast is 15–30 minutes away.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: monastery to museum is about 1 km, museum to the old Jewish cemetery about 1.5 km. Local buses 32 and 50 pass the Vinetu Village turn-off; buses 50 (Klaipėda) and 61 (Palanga) run hourly. Taxis are cheap for the station run.

Walk to the monastery, museum and sundial; a handful of small guesthouses.

North edge (Vytauto g, Vienkiemio g)

Hotel-restaurant and hostel beds 1–2 km out; quiet, needs a car or taxi.

Palanga or Klaipėda

Better beds and food; 15–30 min by bus or car. Most travellers sleep here.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are empty evening streets, unlit level crossings and the coast road after dark; 112 covers everything.
  • Museum is closed Monday and Tuesday; the monastery church is open daily but services limit access.
  • Vinetu Village is a themed teepee camp, not a historic site: check the programme before paying.
  • The lakeside Papludimys park is for picnics, not swimming: the water is silty.
  • Shop alcohol sales stop at 20:00 (15:00 Sundays) nationwide.
  • Bus 61 from Palanga airport is hourly and stops early evening: check the last departure.

  2. Walking cluster with rescue anchors: monastery, sundial, museum, Tyszkiewicz chapel, old Jewish cemetery.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (museum, Vinetu Village, monastery church) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. August festival fixture so the Early Music Festival dates can go green.
