Kretinga

Give Kretinga half a day: the monastery, museum and sundial are a 2 km walk. Sleep in Palanga or Klaipėda unless you want the €50 manor-side rooms.

Kretinga is a small west-Lithuanian town 13 km from Palanga and 26 km from Klaipėda, with a 1605 Franciscan monastery, a manor museum and a 1610 sundial. It is a half-day stop on the Palanga–Klaipėda axis, not a base: the sights sit in one compact centre and the coast is 15–30 minutes away.

Get around

The centre is flat and walkable: monastery to museum is about 1 km, museum to the old Jewish cemetery about 1.5 km. Local buses 32 and 50 pass the Vinetu Village turn-off; buses 50 (Klaipėda) and 61 (Palanga) run hourly. Taxis are cheap for the station run.

  • The lakeside Papludimys park is for picnics, not swimming: the water is silty.
  • Shop alcohol sales stop at 20:00 (15:00 Sundays) nationwide.
  • Bus 61 from Palanga airport is hourly and stops early evening: check the last departure.

Very safe. The real risks are empty evening streets, unlit level crossings and the coast road after dark; 112 covers everything.
